This is from Aindrias Ó Céileachair. maybe "gabháil i meath" means "dul i meathlú"? that's how I understand your reply.

I was just joking, its a quote from An Béal Bocht. Meaning "ní dóigh liom go bhfuil an focal san 'meath' ag an Athair Peadair (arsa an Gaedhilgeoir go cneasta)" but yes for my best guess, never really heard it used

Of course, the word "meath" is found in Father Peter's works.

"Meath" is defined in Dinneen's. I haven't found it with "i" anywhere though. Could that be Béarlachas usage, eg. "in decline"?

As for "goibh" [gev'], it's under "góil(t)" in Seana-Chaint na nDéise II, "góil" being a local variant of, as you suspected, "gabháil". The English words to express it in translation are: to catch, take hold of, yoke (a horse, etc.), take, go (travel along, or take, a road, etc.); with "ar" to beat, strike; with "le" to endure, stand up to.
