A friend has asked if you can use "faram" in place of "liom" in a phrase such as "siúil liom." As the only place I could think of where I've encountered this particular preposition was in the 23rd Psalm ("agus tú faram le do shlat is do bhachall chun sólás a thabhairt dom") I said I thought it likely but that I'd prefer to ask here before I said definitely "yes" or "no.".

So, CAN you use "siúil faram" to mean "walk with me"?

Yes, an older speaker has directly told me "Siúil faram", in fact in older forms of Irish "Siúil liom" would have been incorrect. People don't tend to use fara as much nowadays though.

Was it a calque from English or a logical progression?

Hard to know, it started retracting during a period when people became bilingual, so maybe "le" expanded due to English influence.

Fara can also be Farae, also it taking a séimhiú is optional, although with the séimhiú is more common.

It terms of 'semantic geography' I wonder how much ground has been given in the area of 'prepositional modality' to English, so to speak

I realize most of these would be pretty uncommon, but following the table here and starting with a, does fara form the following contractions and copular forms?

farana
faranár
faranar (both with ar and the regular copular form)
faranarb
faranarbh

I also know that fré means the same thing, but it seems to be even less common (it doesn't even have an entry in Ó Dónaill's Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla; is it used at all these days?

Anyway, "fara" is only used in Munster, afaik, so if you don't speak a Munster dialect, you don't have any reason to use it -- native speakers from outside Munster use other words :)

Alright, but is that right? I’d just like to know at this point.

Tá sé seo suimiúil go leor. Go raibh maith agat, a Esszet, as é a thabhairt chun solais arís :)
