Haigh, a Chairde!

I’ve done several projects in the past to help myself master some grammar topics (and then I always share what I’ve learned via Instagram and YouTube). I never really gave much thought, before now, to sharing them here, though.

My latest (and largest) project was on Irish lenition. An especially big thank you to DJWebb2021 and Labhrás for answering some of my questions along the way!

I’m still a learner, obviously, so I know everything in my guide may not be perfect (and feedback is certainly welcome! ), but I tried my best to be both accurate and thorough, and to word/organize things in a original way, and to come up with my own examples in most cases. I based everything on Standard Irish (both from the Caighdeán Oifigiúil and the Christian Bros., as well as a few other online sources).

Anyway, I hope some of this might be a little helpful to someone…I’ve always gotten such great help on this forum from others; so here’s my attempt at “giving back.”

I know when I hear myself speak Irish, I have a clear English accent. It is to a large extent unavoidable. But can you have another look at your pronunciation in one of those videos of RITH? See https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/rith The r should be the r used in Spanish.

I'll admit the pronunciations on teanglann and on fuaimeanna.ie are a mixed bag. Some have a clear trilled r (as in Spanish perro), some have a flapped r (as in Spanish pero), and some have an r that is very like the English r. But the most native pronunciation is a with a Spanish-style r. Obviously you would only be looking at the Ulster pronunciations.

I wonder what Lars thinks of this, given the obvious variation on teanglann and fuaimeanna?

Hey, thank you for the feedback! Good point about the “r”s … that’s probably my biggest pronunciation struggle cause it’s all so varied, even in Ulster. Yeah, Hopefully Lars can help me out a bit! Thanks again!
