I have asked by a friend to translate 'Family isn't always blood' to Irish.

Is 'ní fuil an teaghlach i gcónaí' the best way of translating this or are there better non-literal translations that anyone knows of?

There may be countless ways to say this.
I'm not sure what you have there is grammatical but here's another possible translation:

Ní hionann teaghlach agus fuil i gcónaí. > Family and blood are not always the same.

Wait for more ideas.
