Couldn't find a word for puppy in my online Irish-English dictionary.
I know from previous questions that "og-bhean" can mean young lady.
Similarly, can "og-mhadra" mean puppy??

In both cases, is the use of the hypen optional??

= coileán

Both 'pup' and 'puppy' are in the dictionaries on 'teanglann.ie'. My 'foclóir poca' also has 'pup'.

There's a proverb: Mar a bhíos an cú mór bíonn an coileán.

ógbhean, ógfhear - but not ógmhadra (except perhaps humorously?). No hyphen (in these cases).

Odd. Just looked in teanglann, and pup was there, but puppy wasn't??
Go figure.
Anyway, thanks for the info.

Hyphens separating the parts of compound words are more common in older writings, and have also survived very strongly in Scottish Gaelic, as with an-diugh (Irish inniu) and an-dè (Irish inné), and (more relevant here) òg-mhadainn ("early morning").

When you think about it, they're the same word. "Puppy" just has that cutesy English "-y" added...it doesn't add any particular meaning.

If you want to do something similar with "coileán," I suppose you could go with "coileáinín," but I'd wait for more input on that.
