On Wikipedia I read that Inis (as Irish name for Ennis, co. Clare) is short for Inis Cluain Ramh Fhada ("island of the long rowing meadow"). I am not a native speaker of the English language. That is why a 'rowing meadow' struck me as very odd. I would have expected a 'rolling meadow'. But looking into the word 'Ramh' I indeed found several connections with the action of rowing and with oars. Therefore the translation seemed to be more correct than at first glance, but still it doesn't seem to make any sense (at least to me).

So... Is the translation correct? If so, what is a 'rowing meadow'? If not, which mistake(s) was (were) made?

Thanks in advance.

Wikipedia is not very trustworthy regarding Irish place names.
Acc. to http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... _irish.htm the correct form is
Inis Cluana Rámh(fh)ada

See there for its meaning.
