I was told today that some speakers in Sligo eclipsed G to make an "n" sound rather than "ng". Anybody here know if this is true?

There are no native speakers of Sligo Irish left, so if people in Sligo pronounce ng- as n-, I guess it's simply because they are learners who don't manage to pronounce ng- at the beginning of a word...

No this was based on native speakers born in the 1800s. I think I can hear it on the Doegen tapes, but I was wondering if there is a solid reference.

The only eclipsed g there is "Bhí fear fadó agus bhí sé i nGaillimh."

I hear rather an usual ng-sound /ŋ/

I think I'm now hearing an "n" because I was told there was an "n", but when I try to hear an "ng" I hear an "ng". Wish we could hear sounds "objectively". Thanks Labhrás.
