Why isn't the 's' in 'spéir' pronounced slender, like in 'scian'? I've never heard anyone say /shpayr/... only /spayr/.

At the beginning of word, the s isn't slender in the groups sf, sm, sp.
Sféar, smigead, spéir... Broad s, but slender f, m and p.
