There's a traditional Irish proverb that might do for this one:

Maireann na daoine ar scáth á chéile: literally "People live in one another's shadow"

In another (older] form, with the same meaning as what Red gave:

Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireas na daoine.
Literally: "[It is] in one another's shadow that people live/survive."

Note that the verb mair can mean both live and survive, depending on the context, and also that "in another's shadow" does not mean in Irish what we might think in English, i.e., that one person overshadows the other.
