Hi everyone!

I'm wondering if I can get some help translating the phrase "Our lives are not our own" into Gaeilge for a tattoo. I'm working on learning the language now but I'm not confident in my ability to word it correctly, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Ní linne an saol is probably what I'd say. Simple and concise.

@ other translators. I was going to suggest "ní linne ár saol féin" which is more in keeping with the English in terms of literal translation, but I feel the definite article is more appropriate in Irish. I am open to correction/improvement on this. AS I write this I am becoming aware that the first translation I give doesn't quite have the nuance of meaning of "owning our OWN lives". What think ye?

Wait for more input.

I'm not sure this would work, but here's my attempt at it anyway - Ní bhíonn ár shaolta féin

I think that's missing something at the end? It doesn't make sense as is.

I was missing something from my original attempt above. The place ment of féin is the key component IMO.

Ní linne féin ár saol

I think the collective "saol" is more appropriate here.

What say ye?

Thank you everyone for the help so far!

If it helps at all or makes things easier, I'm partial to the original BUT I'm open to translations that capture the spirit of the quote (as opposed to a more literal translation). Something along the lines of "our lives do not belong to us" etc etc could potentially work.

As I mentioned, I'm still learning and I'm very much a beginner, but I like "Ní linne féin ár saol" as a possible translation so far.

I'll keep checking in for more input, thank you again everyone!

I think they all work.
I'd prefer: Ní linne féin ár saol.
