Hello,
This is my first post. I am Irish but well out of practice.
An elderly Scottish friend has asked me what this prayer means. its from a memorial stone in a grotto in Ballymurphy (St Patrick's) church yard in Co Carlow.
I have translated the prayer and I'd appreciate corrections.

Here is the Irish :
A dhia bí liom ar mhaigh an áir,
Do ghrásta i m’chroidhe!
Cuir brígh is neart is lúth i m’lámha
An námhad do chlaoidheadh
Go bhfeicfear Éire arís fe cháil,
Bí liom, a dhia!

And here is my attempt at translating:
God be with me in the fight,
your grace in my heart!
Put vigor, strength and health into my hands
to subdue the enemy,
That we might see Ireland respected again,
Be with me, o God!

Thanks in advance for any comments. :-)

I found the photo for him on a flickr site, but cant find it back again. But i saved it to my hard drive. I can post the jpeg on this forum if that is not breaking intellectual property rules.

I'd like to see a picture.

maigh an áir is the battlefield, killing field, "plain of slaughter" literally.

After your intervention, here is my new attempt at translating:

Dear God, be with me on the battlefield,
your grace in my heart!
Put vigor, strength and health into my hands
to subdue the enemy,
Until we see Ireland respected again,
be with me, dear God!

A dhia bí liom ar mhaigh an áir,
Do ghrásta i m’chroidhe!
Cuir brígh is neart is lúth i m’lámha
An námhad do chlaoidheadh
Go bhfeicfear Éire arís fe cháil,
Bí liom, a dhia!

One more thing, do you think that the FF in the round crest at the top of the photo stands for Fianna Fáil?

Yes, of course.
It has been the usual Óglaigh na hÉireann badge since 1913.

I've uploaded the photo to the server and updated the link above.

I think your translation is very nice. :good:
