Hi

Hoping someone / a few of you can help me! My father passed away a couple of years ago and I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out a tattoo to commemorate his memory. Shortly after he died, a friend who had lost her own father wrote me a letter, and one of the things she said was "The greatest legacy is love".

It struck me as a perfect summary of how my sisters and I remember the old man, and I actually used it in the eulogy I delivered at his funeral. So I think it would make a perfect memorial for him as a tattoo.

He was from south Co Limerick, and my mother is from Kerry, and I've used my share of the inheritance to buy a little college on the dingle peninsula, so Munster Irish seems the most fitting!

Thank you so much in advance for your help and suggestions.

Hi Welcome to the forum  ,

'Sé an grá an oidhreacht is mó 'Love is the greatest legacy'*

* (from mór 'great'), has a range of nuances, many of which would fit the context here, making the statement quite ambiguous and open to interpretation. For instance, it could also read as 'love is the biggest/ largest legacy'.

Without loosing the sentiments of your original request, I would propose something similar to:

'Sé an grá an oidhreacht is buaine 'Love is the most enduring legacy'

Wait for more input.

Cian

PS. in Irish font: 'Sé an grá an oiḋreaċt is buaine

Thank you very much! I'll certainly wait for others' thoughts, but think your choice of "enduring" is definitely along the right lines in terms of retaining the original sense. Interested to see what others might also suggest. Thanks again!
