Often shops have sales and generally they put a big (usually red with white writing) sign with the word 'Sale' to advertise the fact. If that sign were to be in Irish, would it say 'Margadh' or something else?

Maybe -
sladmhargadh

Margadh- on its own is usually "market". But you can use it in context to mean bargain -- fuair mé margadh maith.

I have never seen díol used to express 'reduction in prices', usually díol is restricted to the 'act of selling' itself.

ar díol/ le díol 'for sale/ to be sold'

Sladmhargadh is what is usually seen on signs in Irish to denote 'Sale', i.e. reduction in prices.

That's what I meant, but I wasn't sure what Saoirse wanted (for sale vs. on sale)

:GRMA: Looking for the 'there is a sale on in this shop' type of sign. 'Sladmhargadh' would probably cost a lot more for a shop than 'Sale'! There's nothing simple....!

Díolachán is another word as well for 'sale'.

In the dictionary there's also - díol fuílligh - for a clearance sale and - saor-reic - for a bargain sale.
