Is see this verb in RS a bit, but I'd like to ask its context. I understand that it means "do," but I see the same type of sentence with or without it.

For example:

"Tá staidéar agam ar an Gaeilge."
"Tá staidéar á dhéanamh agam ar an nGaeilge."

Is it superfluous in this context, formal, or does it add something?

I would interpret the first to mean "I have studied Irish". And the second to mean "I am (currently) studying Irish".

Are they supposed to mean the same thing.
