Hello folks,

What is a good book on the detailed grammatical history of Irish by chance? I'm interested in learning about it's different stages such as old Irish, middle Irish, etc.

thanks much,

David

As far as I know there hasn't been much published for Middle Irish. Kim McCone has a nice book titled "A First Old Irish Grammar and Reader, including an Introduction to Middle Irish" that covers a little bit about it. But, sadly, nothing I've heard of that details the switch from Old to Middle, then from Middle to Modern. I actually even had a teacher try to convince another one to write it.

There's Stair na Gaeilge, very detailed, but written completely in Irish.

Ah, the famous Stair na Gaeilge which I've never seen in any form, tho I've looked for it online manys the time.

I also have a grammar of Middle Irish, written in French. It cost me 120, or 150 or 200 (I can't recall) euro; Grammaire de Irlandais Moyans is the name http://books.google.ie/books?id=5NawhPn ... ns&f=false

If you have something you wanted looked up, I can try my best to find it, but I haven't read much French for years

Having read it, if you can read Irish, then Stair na Gaeilge is the book for the history of Irish.

It's a available here:
