Céim ar chéim - is what I've seen before (so I can second that - as if I had Irish as good as that of Breadán's) - but it did made me think of - little by little, which - is beagán ar bheagán, but when I looked it up I found a nice addition to the saying -
Beagán ar bheagán, mar a d'ith an cat an scadán (and it rhymes and the sounds match) There's some serious competition there for Pangur Bán.
