Where Braoin translated the first paragraph from the Hobbit, for me it was one of the best threads as Braoin's paragraph really helped me to improve my writing in Irish, so I was selfishly hoping to get a few more gems out of him! Basically I'd like to take a few passages from the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion and see how they might translate into Irish. I'll pick a few good ones and we might give it a try if anybody would be interested!

I had forgotten entirely about that paragraph, a chara. I have had a few ups and downs healthwise since, but all is OK again

Joking aside, it might be an interesting thing to attempt translating some of that fine writing into Gaeilge, and have any translations given discussed here, tweaked, argued about, and finally agreed on by the good folk here on the forum.

Okay, here is a try at the ring inscription.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Fáinne amháin chuin smacht a chur orthu,
Fáinne amháin chuin iad a dh'aimsiú,
Fáinne amháin chuin iad a bhailiú,
agus, fé scáth an oilc, chuin iad a cheangal.

EDIT: Fé scáth can also be ar scáth, I don't which people thinks sounds better, as I've heard both.

Can I ask you this? - in Irish mythology, are there any instances of rings of power being used? - I fully realise that Tolkien based his stories on Beowulf as well as other Scandinavian sources and not at all on Irish sources, though I believe he was interested in Welsh.

Does 'The Ring of Kerry' count? (Sorry Franc, I can resist anything except temptation!)

No it's too weak - An Daingean and Corca Dhuibhne are much stronger

I don't remember having read about rings in Celtic mythology...

Same as Lughaidh Frainc, I don't recall magic rings being important. I'll check my book on Welsh myth later to be sure.
