I was very pleased to receive 'Ó Bhéal an Bhab' from CIC.ie, though I can't imagine why it isn't available from Oidhreacht Corca Dhuibhne but anyway I sent them an email to say that I'd got it and this is what she said in answer -

A chara
Go raibh maith agat,
tá súil agam go mbainfidh tú taithneamh as an leabhar.

The question I have is this - apparently she's not pronouncing the second 't' in taitneamh - is this her dialect (Conamara) or is it pronounced this way elsewhere ? In Foclóir Póca , the second 't' is pronounced, but that might be in the Official Standard.

The pronunciations in Foclóir Póca are not any particular dialect's, and in some cases they don't exist anywhere (like 'gloine' - which is gluine in all dialects - but look up what it says in FP).

Look at page 109 of Learning Irish, I see that taithnigh is pronounced /tæːNʹə/ in Cois Fhairrge.

I am thinking this -tn- is probably realised as a tense n in all dialects - and so the t would not be correct in the pronunciation there? But I'm not sure of Ulster.

It maybe that taithneamh is an informal spelling that suits the pronunciation better.

You could possibly draw a parallel in the way the first d in landlord is elided in English?

Well in the book Gaeilge Chorca Dhuibhne, it shows taithníonn is pronounced /taˈnʹhiːn/ in CD, although I think you could go easy on the h, which might be suggestive (or realised by devoicing the n?)

Ceart go leor - of course - I should have looked at that, as I do have that book as well. I'm more used to seeing sult being used in this context, though I've no idea if that's a question of personal preference or dialect usage.

taithneamh - is how I would pronounce it too.
I don't know why it's not spelled in the Caighdeánach with "th".
I've never heard anybody say it as TAIT_Neamh.

"Taithneach" or "sásamh" is what I would say too rather than "sult".

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.
