Is anyone up for studying a textbook as a group on these forums? As in we take a chapter each week, discuss it on the forum, ask questions, have a big nasty argument about grammar and dialect differences, kiss and make up, then move on to the next chapter.

Seriously, I'd love to do something like this with the old Teach Yourself Irish or An Ghaeilge Bheo book/dvd set. I haven't got much use out of either yet, but I think a group study would help me but a bit more effort in with them. But it doesn't have to be one of those two, I'd be happy to work with any other courses.

I'd certainly love something like that. If it would be any help, I've a bunch of notes about the
differences between Cork Irish as it is in TYI and as it is today. Also between Cork Irish and Corca Dhuibhne.
(I made them during trips to Músgraí and Corca Dhuibhne).
Could be useful if we went through TYI.

Regardless, no matter what we use I think it's a really good idea! :D

Sounds like a good idea to me. We'd have to pick a book that several of us have.

I have the newer version of "Teach Yourself," as well as "Now You're Talking," "Gaeilge Gan Stró (lower intermediate edition), "Gramadach Gan Stró," "An Ghaeilge Bheo," and Stenson's "Basic Irish" and "Intermediate Irish."

That sounds good. I'd be interested in having a look at those notes some time, even if we end up doing a different book.

Out of those options, I have An Ghaeilge Bheo and the two Stenson workbooks.

There used to be a version of the old Teach Yourself with mp3 files online, but I can't seem to find it now. Maybe it got taken down for copyright reasons?

Id be interested if it involved some sort of skype or facetime as its speaking I really want to improve.

I have Gaeilge Gan Stró (lower intermediate), An Ghaeilge Beo, Learning Irish, Teach Yourself Irish, Colloquial Irish & Turas Teanga. I am working on Gaeilge Gan Stró at the moment so thatd be my prefered text but whatever you think.

Coincidently I have the PDFs & MP3s for An Ghaeilge Beo, Learning Irish, Teach Yourself Irish & Colliqual Irish so if we choose from one of those I can send someone who hasnt got them the pdf n mp3s.

I think there should be different threads for each textbook. That way people can follow a particular course and stick to a particular dialect if they choose. This is particularly important when not everybody has a copy of, or access to, the same textbook.

If people want to dabble in different dialects or more than one textbook, they can participate in more than one thread.

That might save a few arguments, for a start. Of course, it doesn't hurt to see how the different dialects relate to each other or the standard, but it shouldn't be allowed to detract from someone's enjoyment of a particular textbook or dialect.

I'd suggest using this thread as a launch pad to gather expressions of interest in particular courses and then starting a new thread for the actual study of each textbook.

Since Mick mentioned the old Teach Yourself Irish. I've set up the study group thread with a link where anyone can download the materials online including a searchable pdf and soundfiles:

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1406

The old Teach Yourself Irish is a special case as it is out of print and unlikely to be resurrected.

For newer textbooks, links to online materials are provided on the understanding that you have actually purchased the book and CDs, etc., and are supplementing the hard copy with the functionality of searchable computer files. Please respect other people copyright as a lot of hard work goes into making textbooks and if you want good textbooks to appear in future, you should show your support to the people doing that hard work. (There's a lot of crap out there too, but that's another story. )

Cad é an buntáiste idir seanTYI agus an leabhar nua?

Teagascann an seanTYI Gaeilge Mhúscraí, ie. canúint nádúrtha, nuair nach dteagascann an ceann úr ach Gaeilg chaighdeánach.
