Hi lads,

I was looking around irishgaelictranslator last night, I know consorting with the enemy. I just wanted to see the sinking ship in action. Anyway, I got those magical pop- ups and my laptop started making noises, I just x out of it before I could even read what it was about. I got a text 2 hours later from 17863030895 number stating that I was the reciprient of a gift, all I had to do was log into http://www.sony.ie_freegiveawaymadness_info. Naturally I was a bit suspicious an I decided
to investigate- I typed in the address into the internet and in tranferred me to Ziinga.com(?- anybody hear about it)

It wanted my name and email details. Lets just say the terms and conditions look a bit shaky to say the least. I decided to look into it a bit further and various watchdog sites: http://www.smswatchdog.com/text-message ... 63030895/4. I have left a few comments there also. I am just wondering if there is a connection between the pop- ups and the text I got on my mobile. On my comments I have asked if anyone else were logged into or browsing irishgaelictranslator?

The main reason I am posting this here is to find out if anyone else has gotten this message? if there is a connection between the irishgelictranslator and this scam. I know some of ye have an auld look at the sinking ship from time to time!- don't lie! :D . The scam is fairly widespread with people from New Zeland and Australia recieving the texts the only difference is its sony.au is the address etc... I am going to ring Sony in tomorrow, one complaint from a person on the watch dog site is when he tried to do a search on the sony web page, it tried to turn off some of his anti- virus software- worrying! I am also going to ring my mobile provider to find out how my number was released. Anyone else experience a text like this? or if anyone has advice, greatly appreciated!

:GRMA: ,

Cian

A friend of mine said she had a lot of trouble with Zinga on Facebook, it is some sort of game company that uses the FB as a framework for its software, don't know if this has any connection with IGTF or not though.

Zinga sounds familiar but the site it transferred me to was Ziinga.com- a shopping site not a gaming one, maybe they are the same thing. My fault I wrote Zinga instead of what it should be Ziinga.com. Hopefully vodafone and sony will have some answers.

How did your friend sort the problem with facebook?

If they want your e-mail, they'll likely sell it people who'll just send you spam.

It's not that IGTF have an affiliation with them per sei, just that that is one of the sites it uses to earn money from advertisements.

Oh I understand that, but if scammers are using the advertising as a means of distributing their scam and the scammers are paying IGTF to advertise then IGTF are indirectly associated. Legal Legislation is definitly lacking in this area. What can be certain is Sony a huge international organisation is not going to b happy with their name being dragged through the mud. More than likely there isn't a connection. I just thought it a bit of a coincidence that after my computer going mad with a pop up congradulating me and two hours later I get a text telling me I won a prize.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the source was one of the IGTF advertisers.
I haven't been there for a week at least. I'm banned.. for the third time

Sony has had a lot of trouble with hackers in the past year. I'd diffintely let them know.

I would be worried about any spammer who's gotten your phone number, he might have access to more information too like your credit card.

I never heard of Ziinga. But I have played games online on Facebook with Zinga, and they haven't given me any trouble. I'm careful about security on Facebook and I don't usually allow applications access to my information.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Oh, I agree, but this is the Internet, this kind of thing is commonplace.

I will let Sony know. What was even more worrying, when someone typed in the address in the legitimate Sony site, something tried to turn off his anti- virus software! Thats some serious hacking. Sony are aware because lots of people at the watch dog have informed Sony. And the watch dog has recieved a further 12 complaints since I complained around 3 hours ago. I agree I hate releasing personal details online anywhere, I never give out my number. I understand its rampant on the internet- through emails etc... But hardly ever throuh your mobile. I know it occurs on house phones but they are scammers usually going through phone books. Last time I checked my mobile number wasn't in any directery inquiry :D :D .

I would be surprised if you'd get a text from a pop-up on a website, unless you entered your mobile phone number there for some reason.
