Incidentally, the meaning of the word "football" is different from state to state in Australia and can refer to rugby league, rugby union, or "Aussie rules" (Gaelic football in disguise
), but never to soccer (except by soccer enthusiasts), even though all the others are pretty much variations of handball.

But that would be the same in english as well both are simply football.
so we would say in english dublin beat derry in the football.
or im going to play football meaning soccer.
We never seemed to get confused about which game we meant
