tráithnín = dry grass stalk

Ní fiú tráithnín é. = He's not worth anything.

Ní raibh tráithnín éadach air. = He hadn't a stitch of clothes on him.
(caighdeánach - éadaigh ?)

Leagfá le tráithnín mé = You could've knocked me down with a feather.

Bhí sí chomh caol le tráithnín = She was straw thin.

sop = dry grass stalk

Níl ann ach sop in áit na scuaibe. = It is only a whisp of hay instead of a brush (meaning - a poor substitute/makeshift)

I remember one time when we my mother and I were watching a bird picking up bits of dry grass to make a nest. She said "is saor sop maith é".

dab = lump; dollop; dab/blob

Ar mhaith leat dab eile fataí brúite? = Would you like another dollop of mash?

Bhí dab deas bagún agam le haigh mo bhéile. = I had a nice slab of bacon for my dinner.

Dab do dhuine é. = He's a lout/clod.

Dab péint. = A splash of paint.

geonaíl = whine / whinge
Literally the sound a dog or similar animal makes but used for people too who complain in a sort of half crying way, to whinge.


Bhí an madadh ag geonaíl. = The dog was whining.
Stop do chuid geonaíl. = Stop your whinging.
