bhí mé féin agus mo déifiúir ag labhairt faoi ainmneacha buachaillí areir, tá sí ag súil le leanbh go luath agus is breá léi ainmneacha Gaelach, ach cé go dtaitníonn ainmneacha Gaelach go mór léi do chailíní, mar shampla; niamh, saoirse, caoimhe srl ní thaitníonn ainmneacha buachaillí léi. Bhí mé ag smaoineamh agus ní raibh mé in ann a smaoineach ainmneacha buachaillí go dtaitníonn go mór liomsa ach oiread. Is maith liom Dara, Liam, Seán, ainmneacha simplí ach ní thaitníonn siad léi. Ní maith liom Diarmuid, Cathal, srl, agus ní thaitníonn na hainmneacha léi in ar gcuid teaghlach cosiúl le Aodh, Pádraig, Peadar, Éamonn srl

Aon smointe agaibh? Ainmneacha simplí ba mhaith léi mar tá sí ina cónaí i Sasana agus ní duine ar bith ann abalta ag rá ainmneacha mar Cathal, Diarmuid srl

How about Bonaveantúr, Feardorcha or perhaps Aidhlmear? Maybe not! The problem with names in Irish is that they are Irish! ...and often difficult for non-Irish people to get their heads/tongues around. Conn, Oscar, Brian, Colm, Ardal are simpler names. I know you mentioned Seán already - a fine name if you ask me!

Liam is pronounced just as it's spelled, so that eliminates the problems with non-Irish speakers. It's short with no confusing letter patterns and it's a nice name.

Although the spelling of "Eoin" might look odd to some English speakers, the name is well-enough known from the auther Eoin Colfer ("Artemis Fowl") that I doubt it would cause too many problems. Same thing with "Colm" (actor Colm Meany also being pretty well-known).

When I was in England, some people called me Mícheál. Ok, they probably wouldn't have spelled it like that, but it was well known that "Meehall" is Irish for Michael. Séamus is another one that most English people know.

I like the name Dara a lot, and it's easy to pronounce and spell. There might be some difficulty with the Irish broad d and broad r, but even in Ireland, those subtleties of pronunciation are usually ignored.

Here's a good site to look up: http://www.namenerds.com/irish/lists.html

Macdara and Cathal would be among my favourites too. And Antaine.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Two others that are easy to pronounce are Ciarán and Breandán. While you might run into people wanting to pronounce them "KEER-in" and "BREN-din," it wouldn't take too much training for folks to get the drift.

Is maith liomsa Cillian and it is pretty straight forward. Cillian Murphy has helped make it accessible too. Let us know who wins!

And if the English can cope with all the Kacpers, Yousefs and Suresh's living over there, they should be able to manage names like Cillian, Ciarán and Breandán.
