Taking on a language can be a huge undertaking, daunting , especially when you have spectacularly failed to take it on in 14 years of school.

I know its hard after a long day to trek to that class and try focus. A lot of people drop out or just cant find the time. Doesn't make them wish otherwise and congratulate those who manage it. I support lots of things, human rights, environmental issues, rural development, wildlife re population, better health care system , etc. etc. etc.

But I don't, I cant be actively involved in all of these things i feel passionately about and support in some form . Im not a rich philanthropist. But i do what i can, donate a small bit of money, read about, talk about it to increase awareness, vote in ways i hope will further these things. This is how id classify supporting something.

Being actively involved is the next step. In the case of Irish, if you join a class, conversation group, try use it more with friends, send your kids to Irish schools/events. This is you actively spending your time to futher those goals. I supported the idea of speaking more Irish, years before I felt I could put the time aside to actively involve myself.

I think more people reading in it would be a step easier than speaking it; it would support papers and books and periodicals and help breach at least one beachhead. It's not too hard. I don't watch much TV so spending about 3 hours a day at it not a great chore and one's ability quickly improves.

What would militate against any popular uptake is that it takes work and most reading today is mostly for light entertainment (and I include newspapers in that too, as I feel the news is not tuned in to for information reasons, as such) and so wouldn't be enjoyable for most
