In other dialects of Irish there is no initial "w" sound.

Actually, all dialects have initial "w" sound in this set.

Connachta:

uaim /wem´/
uait /wet´/
uaidh /wai/
uaithi /wohə/ (GC) or /wo:/ (GCF)
uainn /weN´/
uaibh /web´/
uathu /wohəb/ (GC) or/wo:b´/ (GCF)

Cois Fhairrge uses uaidh /wai/ instead of ó, e.g., uaidh Sheán.

An Teanga Bheo gives the Uladh set as:

wuam, wiam
wuaid, wiaid
wua, wia
wuaithe, wiaithe
wuainn, wiainn
wuaibh, wiaibh
wuafa, wiafa

Perhaps Lughaidh can give the appropriate phonetics for those?

I'll gladly eat my hat after listening to Bríd on Forvo

Now it appears that the only place there isn't a "w" sound may be in Munster (but not Cian's own dialect.)

 , looks that way alright! Sorry about the confusion lads.

I just assumed Cian knew what he was talking about (regarding Munster dialect at least). :darklaugh:

Now, Breandán you should know better than to trust what I'da be sayin! :prof: Looks like I should be doing more of this :reading: and less of this :computer: .

No worries, Cian. I've eaten a few hats in my time. There is plenty to learn about each other's dialects.

By the way I've been told that:

Bhuam or Bhuaim are used in Kerry and Waterford, but that the former is the original/more dialectal form.

"Bhuam". Deirtear Bhuam agus Bhuaim, ach ins an naoú haois déag, níl ann ach "bhuam".
Nuair a deirim "Port Lairge", is í an Rinn atá i gceist agam, b'fhéidir gur dúradh "bhuaim" nó "uaim" ins an chuid eile desna Déise. Dúradh "uaim"
in Oirthear Chorcaí, más buan mo chuimhne.

:good: , Thá bhuam staidéar a dhéanadh ar shaothair Phádraig Piarais Chondúin do sgríg litreacha agus dánta abhaile ó Mheirice ins na 1700idí móra. Dob' as Baile Mhac Óide é ó dhúchas gar dom' bhaile fhéinig. Is ait an rud é gur sgríg sé i nGaoluinn óir gur sgríg beagnach gach aoinne eile abhaile i mBéarla ag an am, dh'iarraidh ar a muinntir a mhealladh thall chuca. Bhí na cnoic ba ghlasa i Meirice ins na litreacha a sheol sé ach bhí cumha agus deoraíocht ins na dántaibh pearsanta do sgríg sé rud a nochtaigh a uaigneas agus cad a bhí ina chroí istigh aige; gur bhraith sé Banba a-bhfad bhuaidh.
