apart from the Doegan recordings are there any other substantial bodies of recordings of Dialects now gone.
I know they were done prior to WW2.

But as far as I know there may still have been one or two speakers in many areas well after this date.
Co Clare - maybe as late as 1990's ?
Beara - I think i read some where a speaker in the 70's
East Cork- not sure on date, think post WW2.
South Tipperary - 1950's?
East Mayo-?
Sligo- read once of two elderly brothers living till 1990's.
Tyrone- 1950's?
Louth- around Omeath- 1950's?
Antrim- 1960's?

Was there any work done on recoding these dialects before they passed ?

Well, Dáithí, film or tape was very expensive in the 1950s, and believe it or not, a lot of the recordings of the Folklore Commission of Ireland weren't kept! The tape was reused! So a lot of things would have been lost right there.

Labharfad le Cách - is a wonderful book and CD by Peig Sayers - interesting that RTÉ had her recordings - and also even more interesting that the BBC had recordings of Peig Sayers that were used for Labharfad le Cách! Why would the BBC have heard of Peig Sayers? Maybe she was a famous individual and they recorded her, but no one else? Or maybe they have more stuff in Irish?

I know there is a lot of material in the UCD béaloideas archives that has never been released. A few recordings from the Déise Gaeltacht in Tipperary for example.

Oh I know it was expensive, just thought there might be more about that just the Doegen recordings.

Very strange they would go to the effort of recording something and then re record over it .

Lon Dubh, by not released do you mean no one can get access to it ?

What about folklore commission , RTE, BBC archives are they accessible ?

Suimiúil. I particularly love the subtitles of Bím/Bíonn mé i.... 'I be in Omagh', 'I be in Strabane'!! Hiberno English i gceist ansin!

There is an extant recording of a native speaker of Kilkenny Irish who was recorded in the 1930s. I don't think it was one of the Doegen recordings, however. I believe the National Folklore Collection at UCD has it.

great , thanks :)

Love the accents and pronunciation of the old speakers.

The Naíscoil and youth clubs were very interesting. Its been repeatedly shown around the world that bilingual education alone doesn't result in habitual speakers, it needs to be used outside the class room.

The Naíscoil seems similar to the language nest model used in New Zealand, Canada and other places. I think its a great model worth considering here. Children between the age of 0-5 learn to speak and most importantly play and interact with their pears through the target language. They often utilize older speakers in the community to interact with the children as they have the most fluent ability.

As it is by the time they start school a lot of their language use is already established. A good preschool system means they have over 2,200 hours of exposure to the language before they start school.

Youth clubs then just give them an opportunity to use it outside the school environment and reinforce its use within a peer group.

At long last some of what was collected in 1937 as part of the Schools Project is being put on-line. Of course it's only written material without any accompanying sound recordings, but at least it gives you an idea of what schoolchildren were noting down at that time. Here's an example -

Dúchas - Bailiúchán na Scol - Co. Mhaigh Eo - Doirín
There's also the RTÉ Fíorasach programme Ó Bhéal go Béal posted up on YouTube by Seán Ó Briain, which I've mentioned before (either here or at the other place, I can't remember which)

and there's this lecture in English, though there are various documents in Irish are shown on the screen
