Lughadh agus Bríd: Guthán was used around Teach Mór and An Spidéal in the 1940s. I first heard fón used in the late 1950s in Dublin. Among us "in" crowd it was considered VERY Bearlachas.

A person from Na Forbacha told me that 'Teilifís' was once 'Cianamharcán'.

Great replies everyone and many thanks.
Oh and Brid, I love word of the day, I'm struggling with pronunciations as I only have 2 hours a week at class to hassle the teacher and the synthesiser on http://www.abair.tcd.ie/ is a noble idea but cant compare to your voice.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Another very nice thing about Bríd's word of the day is you get to hear another dialect. The person who recorded the voice at abair.ie is from Gaoth Dobhair (I know they originally hoped to get the other dialects in there, but I don't think that's happened yet).
