Hi everyone, I was hoping you all could help me with this one - In Teach Yourself Irish and on the Cork Irish page I’m seeing first conjugation verbs’ 2nd personal imperative plural written as follows - cuiridh, dúnaidh etc.
Pronounciation guides in both resources are giving ‘ig’ as the realisation of the ‘aidh’ spelling.

However, when I listen to the Cork Irish audio I’m hearing these pronounced with an ‘í’ e.g. cuiríg, dúnaíg etc.
I also saw a non native speaker, but learner of Kerry Irish, confirming that ‘íg’ is heard there.
So which is correct? I assume the short vowel pronounciation has been superseded by the long vowel one but wanted to confirm.

I would take a form like míníg to be imperative plural. I'd be surprised if it came over to other forms in "-igh"/"-idh" by analogy, given it has a distinct grammatical function where it occurs.

I don't think I've ever noticed something like cuiríg. I don't think this would even be the expected imperative form either. Do you think it's a recent development?

For 2nd conjugation plural imperatives like mínigh, ceannaigh etc that form is expected - mínígh, ceannaígh etc. but for the 1st conjugation I have absolutely no idea if it’s a recent thing or not.

By any chance do you know what the pattern is for those first conjugation verbs that end in ‘igh’?

I’ve found audio for:
- faigh: faigíg
- nigh: nígh (presumably nighíg but the medial gh is being rendered as í like you would get for nighim = ním)

I’d be curious about ones like léigh, dóigh, suigh, glaoigh etc.
Especially because I’m seeing suíghis for suigh (where the gh is pronounced as a slender g), which I’ve never come across before.

I like how carefully you’re comparing the written forms with the actual Cork Irish audio. I think the regional variation is especially interesting here, since what learners hear in Cork or Kerry may differ from the pronunciation guides in older or broader teaching materials. Basketball Random
